Songfacts®:

  • Lena Meyer-Landrut, who is also known by her stage name Lena, is a German singer. She represented Germany in the 2010 Eurovision Song Contest in Oslo, Norway at the age of 19, and won the contest with this song.
  • Danish songwriter John Gordon and American lyricist Julie Frost wrote this catchy love song. The lyrics describe the thoughts of a woman in love who compares herself to a lonely traveler ("Like a satellite I'm in orbit all the way around you/ And I would fall out into the night/ Can't go a minute without your love."). Frost explained on the Eurovisionarysite, "It deals with all the crazy hidden things a girl does and feels when she is in love. A man can make her feel everything at once, joyful but also tormented and helpless."
  • "Satellite" was submitted for consideration for the talent show Unser Star für Oslo (Our Star for Oslo), a national television programme to select the German entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2010, and on March12, the audience chose Meyer-Landrut to sing this song at the songfest. The following day "Satellite" was made available for digital download and it sold over 100,000 downloads in its first week, becoming Germany's fastest selling digital release. It debuted at #1 in the German singles chart, and was certified gold after the first week and platinum after the fourth week of its release.
  • The 55th annual Eurovision Song Contest was broadcast from the Telenor Arena in Bærum, a suburb of Oslo, Norway on 29 May 2010. "Satellite" received a total of 246 points, winning over Turkey's entry "We Could Be the Same" with a margin of 76 points, the second-biggest in Eurovision history, behind only "Fairytale's" margin of 169 points in the 2009 contest.
  • The song was Germany's second win in the songfest's 55-year history. Germany's other victory was in 1982 when another teenager, 17-year-old Nicole triumphed with the anti-war ballad "Ein bisschen Frieden" ("A Little Peace").
