Songfacts®:

  • "Ask God to teach you, then persevere with a smile," Lenny Kravitz sings on "Dig In," the lead single from his sixth studio album. The funky hard-rock track is about digging into his faith when times get tough. He told The Aquarian in 2009: "Life in general, there's always challenges everyday. What I've been taught and what I have experienced is to trust God. There's times when your faith is higher and times when it's lower, we're human beings. We go up and down, but at the end of the day, it’s really about that. You take what seems to be an obstacle or what seems to be bad, and you turn it into something good. You turn it into a lesson, something that's going to take you to the next place. That's really what it's about. Having something so-called bad happen to you, that takes from where you thought you were going, and takes you somewhere else, can just be God leading you to a better place."
  • This is one of many spiritually-themed songs from Kravitz, who is half Jewish but practices Christianity. Others include "Are You Gonna Go My Way," "Believe," and "God Is Love."
  • This earned Kravitz the Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance, which was his fourth consecutive win in the category.
  • The music video, directed by Samuel Bayer, features Kravitz and his band performing on a float in the middle of the ocean with a helicopter circling them. The clip is book-ended by TV footage of a woman selling jewelry on a home shopping channel.
  • This was used on the pilot episode of the Nickelodeon sitcom Drake & Josh ("Hug Me, Brother" - 2004). It also played during the end credits of the 2002 Japanese action movie Returner.
  • This was used in promos for the 2002 NBA Playoffs.
  • This peaked at #13 on the Modern Rock chart.
