  • Leona Lewis was born in Islington, London, to a Welsh mother and a father of Guyanese descent. She became a star in the UK after winning The X Factor there in 2006, and in 2008 she went global with "Bleeding Love," a song that topped the charts in many countries, including America.
  • She attended the Sylvia Young Theatre School, whose other famous former pupils include Amy Winehouse, Rita Ora, and Emma Bunton of The Spice Girls. Lewis moved onto the Italia Conti Academy, before completing her education at the BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology.
  • Lewis originally trained as an opera singer, then moved into jazz and blues before eventually settling into pop music.
  • Leona Lewis beat Ray Quinn in the final of The X Factor in December 2006. She released as her winner's single a cover of "A Moment Like This," which was Kelly Clarkson's victory song when she won American Idol in 2002. Despite not being released until December 20, 2006, it ended the year as the UK's second bestselling single, beaten only by Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy."

  • She is a patron of the Hopefield Animal Sanctuary in Brentwood, Essex, where Lewis keeps 200 rescue animals, including a two-legged llama.
  • Leona Lewis married her longtime boyfriend Dennis Jauch in an intimate ceremony on July 27, 2019. The singer exchanged vows with the choreographer at a Tuscan vineyard, south of Florence, in front of 180 guests. Lewis first met Jauch back in 2010 when he was a backup dancer on one of her tours.
  • Leona Lewis received her OBE during an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle on July 16, 2025, in recognition of her services to music and charity. She said it felt like the honor was for her family's legacy too, especially her grandmother, an immigrant who overcame a great deal of adversity.
  • Lewis' second album, Echo, was released in 2009 and did fairly well, but over the next few years she found herself at odds with her record label, Syco, and struggling with the weight of celebrity. In 2014 she left the label and posted a confessional letter explaining why. She released another album on Island Records in 2015 but then took a long break from touring and recording.
  • Lewis performed at various festivals, showcases and TV shows in America to promote her albums, but she never toured there. She did do a holiday-themed Las Vegas residency in 2025 called A Starry Night.
  • She didn't think she would win The X Factor, so she kept her job as a receptionist throughout the process. People would come into her workplace and recognize her from the show.
  • Lewis says "Bleeding Love" changed meaning for her after having her first child, a daughter named Carmel, in 2022. For Lewis, it went from being a song about romantic love to one about the love Carmel has opened up to her.
