Songfacts®:

  • The seventh track of Lil Nas X's debut EP 7 finds the rapper seeking closure from the past. The song is about letting go, abandoning fear and moving forward in the right direction.
  • On the chorus, Lil Nas sings about being true to himself and following his own heart, rather than looking to please other people.

True say, I want and I need
To let go, use my time to be free
It's like it's always what you like
    It's always what you like

During the song's single verse, Lil Nas X talks about expressing himself in a new way and living the truth.

Brand new places I'll choose and I'll go, I know
Embracin' this news I behold unfolding
    I know, I know, I know it don't feel like it's time
But I look back at this moment, I'll see that I'm fine
  • On June 30, 2019, the final day of Pride Month, Lil Nas X hinted that the song's lyrics about liberation and freedom also serve as a coming out announcement.

"Some of y'all already know, some of y'all don't care, some of y'all not going f--k with me no more," he tweeted. "But before this month ends I want y'all to listen closely to 'C7osure'."

The rapper followed up the tweet with one showing his EP cover, which features a rainbow-colored tower.
  • The nocturnal funk tune was produced by frequent Drake collaborators Allen Ritter and Boi-1da. The pair also supplied the beat for Rihanna's "Work" and G-Eazy's "No Limit."
