Songfacts®:

  • Lil Tjay – real name Tione Jayden Merritt – was walking with two friends near a shopping plaza in Edgewater, New Jersey, when an armed robber shot him seven times. Tjay was admitted to hospital with multiple gunshot wounds and underwent emergency surgery.

The New York police arrested 27-year-old Mohamed Konate two days later and charged him with three counts of first-degree attempted murder and first-degree armed robbery.

"Beat The Odds" is the first song Lil Tjay felt inspired to record while recovering in the hospital from the shooting. He dropped the track on August 26, 2022, two days after the rapper gave fans the first update on his health following the horrific incident.
  • Throughout the solemn but resilient song, Lil Tjay raps about his hard early life, gang affiliations, and his need to carry a gun to protect himself.
  • KBeazy (24kGoldn's "Mood," Lil Nas X's "Thats What I Want") supplied the production with KXVI (French the Kid's "Daily Duppy," DJ Khalid's "Beautiful"), and Desirez beats.
  • Lil Tjay recorded "Beat The Odds Part 2," a remix of "Beat the Odds" featuring a verse from frequent collaborator Polo G. Tjay brings fresh rhymes while blending in his original verse. KBeazy, KXVI and Desirez' production is also remixed so more of the background vocals are heard. The rapper included the new version on his 222 album.
