Songfacts®:

  • Lindsay Ell wrote this guitar-driven country-rock song with Fred Wilhelm and Chris Stevens for her The Project album. Released as the follow-up to "Waiting on You", it reached #1 on the Canada Country airplay chart. It was not only Ell's debut chart-topper, but also the first single by a solo female artist to reach the peak position on that tally since Terri Clark's "In My Next Life" in 2008.
  • The lyrics refer to the adrenaline rush of a new love. Eli explained to iHeart Radio: "It talks about, 'I feel like I'm falling in love with you so much that you're stealing my own heart away from me.'"
  • "Criminal" along with the rest of the album was produced by Sugarland's Kristian Bush. Ell described him as "like Yoda in the studio" and a "mad scientist."
