Songfacts®:

  • This plaintive piano ballad is one of the two McVie solo compositions on Lindsay Buckingham / Christine McVie. The song was first written about the man who helped the songstress after her marriage broke up and she found herself isolated in a huge house in South East England.

"Game of Pretend was originally about my therapist, the guy who actually got me out of the dark place," McVie explained to The Sun. "It somehow morphed in the verses into a love song but the choruses are about how blessed I was that he came into my life."
