Songfacts®:

  • "The Emptiness Machine," released on September 5, 2024, is a milestone for Linkin Park, their first original song since the tragic loss of Chester Bennington and the departure of drummer Rob Bourdon. The track also introduces two fresh faces to the band's lineup: Emily Armstrong, co-vocalist and frontwoman of hard rock band Dead Sara, and Colin Brittain, who takes over the drum kit.
  • "The Emptiness Machine" is a rock anthem that somehow still manages to sound like classic Linkin Park while taking them into new musical territory. The song starts with Mike Shinoda, who delivers the opening verse in his usual half-sung, half-rapped style. But just as you're getting comfortable, Armstrong's vocals slide in, sneaking up on you in the best possible way before she hits you with a raspy, powerful scream that really takes off in the chorus.

Armstrong's voice brings a new dynamic to Linkin Park's sound – it's raw, it's gritty, and it has that punk-rock edge that makes you think she could either front a band or start a brawl, depending on her mood. Linkin Park guitarist Brad Delson summed it up nicely to Billboard:

"The song starts with Mike, and Emily's vocal kind of sneaks in surreptitiously and then hits you hard over the head in the second chorus, and just builds intensity with both of their vocals through the end of the song."
  • Armstrong doesn't try to replicate Bennington's distinctive style - a decision that made the band's lives a little more complicated. "We had to pitch some stuff, change the key so that it's in her target register," Mike Shinoda explained with a laugh. "We had to relearn songs that we've been playing live for 20 years in order to do that, and it's such a mindf--k! It's so hard! My brain is just having a really hard time with a couple of songs."

But there was at least one silver lining in this transition; Linkin Park didn't have to change gender in any of their old lyrics. "All the singles, all the songs, and we didn't have to change any words," said Shinoda. And that's great - I feel so lucky."
  • Lyrically, "The Emptiness Machine" dives deep into the familiar Linkin Park territory of emotional upheaval and identity crisis. Using the metaphor of an "emptiness machine," the song explores the false promises that trap us in a cycle of disappointment, which could be interpreted as a dig at both toxic relationships and the cutthroat nature of the music industry. The lyrics don't pull any punches:

I let you cut me open just to watch me bleed
Gave up who I am for who you wanted me to be

It's not exactly a new theme for Linkin Park fans – shades of "Numb" come to mind, with its aching refrain:

I'm tired of being what you want me to be
Feeling so faithless, lost under the surface
  • The song was a collaborative effort, with all six current members contributing to the writing process. Mike Shinoda took on the role of the main producer, with Brad Delson and Colin Brittain serving as co-producers.
  • Linkin Park isn't the first band to soldier on after losing their lead singer; there's a long history of major rock bands reinventing themselves after the loss. Here are a few examples:

AC/DC did it in spectacular fashion after Bon Scott's death, recruiting Brian Johnson and releasing Back in Black, one of the best-selling albums of all time.

Queen took a different approach, performing with guest vocalists like Paul Rodgers and Adam Lambert. While not replacing Mercury, these collaborations allowed Queen to continue performing and recording new material.

Alice in Chains regrouped with William DuVall after Layne Staley's death.

Stone Temple Pilots briefly featured Linkin Park's own Chester Bennington before recruiting Jeff Gutt.

INXS, in their uniquely INXS way, held a reality TV contest to find a new frontman after Michael Hutchence's death.
  • Linkin Park gave "The Emptiness Machine" its TV debut when they performed it on the September 17, 2024, episode of The Tonight show with Jimmy Fallon.
  • "The Emptiness Machine" is the lead single from Linkin Park's eighth album, From Zero. It topped the UK Albums Chart, the band's fourth #1 in the UK and their first since 2012's Living Things.
  • Directed by Mark Fiore, the live video for "The Emptiness Machine" captures the band's high-energy performance at their sold-out show at Wembley Stadium in London in June 2025.
