Songfacts®:

  • This track is based on a 1967 quote from Martin Luther King in which he talks about the connection between his feelings on Vietnam and the African-American civil rights movement. King laments that the horrors of modern life "cannot be reconciled with wisdom, justice and love."
  • King's address is one of three samples of notable speeches by American political figures on A Thousand Suns. The other two audio quotes are by workers rights activist Mario Savio (on Wretches and Kings ) and the father of the atom bomb Robert Oppenheimer (on The Radiance ). Vocalist and co-producer Mike Shinoda explained to NME: "I just felt in all three cases, those speeches when you hear them now, resonate in a way very differently from when they were first delivered. But they apply to things that are going on today."
