Songfacts®:

  • Irish singer and multi-instrumentalist Lisa Hannigan got her big break in 2001 when after a chance meeting with singer-songwriter Damien Rice in the student bar at Trinity College, Dublin, she became his backing singer. After five years Rice told Hannigan her services weren't required anymore and she embarked on a solo career. This is the lead single from her debut album Sea Sew.
  • This tingle-inducing song became an airplay hit on Irish and American radio stations and earned Hannigan the admiration of Jason Mraz. The I'm Yours singer invited her to support him on 42-date US tour in 2008.
  • This song features in the Colin Farrell starring film Ondine. Hannigan told The Independent September 4, 2009: "Neil Jordan needed a song for a wedding scene, a really romantic song, so I sang 'Lille'. When a song works on a soundtrack it's brilliant. When it works, it makes everything bigger and the drama larger."
  • Sea Sew was recorded in a cold barn in the Irish countryside. Hannigan chose the album title after she and her mother knitted the needle work featured on the album cover, and picked out the many references to the sea in the lyrics.
