  • When the COVID-19 pandemic hit the US, Lissie spent lockdown on her Iowa farm, where the forced isolation made it impossible to run from her pain after a breakup. The experience inspired "Flowers," the lead single from her fifth studio album, Carving Canyons, where she uses the garden as a metaphor for personal growth.

"It was an important period of time for me to explore some of my dark places and process it all," she explained in a press release. "The prettiest blooms literally come from s--t, it's a fertilizer. I wanted to claim my right to feel my feelings. As I grieved - not only for a relationship, but for the world in the midst of a pandemic - I felt like my anger made people uncomfortable, but I came out the other side empowered and ready to step back into my light. I can grow my own flowers and make my own joy."
  • Lissie wrote this with Henry Brill (Rhys Lewis, Old Sea Brigade) and Bre Kennedy (Nina Nesbitt, Echosmith). Kennedy, an indie-pop singer-songwriter, also added vocals to the track.
  • Lissie has never shied away from singing about her love life. She told Songfacts that one of her earliest tunes, "When I'm Alone," was about her devastation over the breakdown of a relationship.
