Songfacts®:

  • Liz Phair's debut album is a song-by-song response to the Rolling Stones' 1972 album, Exile On Main St. While Mick Jagger is fixated on a woman's hips in "Shake Your Hips," Phair is enamored by a guy's tongue in "Glory."

"It's talking about this sort of intimidating rock dude that everyone knows - someone that's legendary in the scene," Phair explained to Rolling Stone in 2018. "I'm talking about how his tongue snakes out in the club and there's just kind of, like, this wispy, high organ that I always associate with the character's tongue just kind of running through the song. I love that."
