Songfacts®:

  • Scott Lucas, the lead guitarist and singer of the alt rock band Local H, wrote the song after the death of a close friend. He explained in an A.V. Club interview: "Wrote the lyrics for this on the way to a wake for my friend Lexi. It's a funeral song, but I didn't want it to be morose. I wanted it to be unsentimental and kind of triumphant, and above all else, unapologetic. Anything less would've felt like lying." >>>

  • In the lyrics, Lucas remembers the happier, carefree times of youth (Think back in '98, Drunk parties at your place) before recalling when he got the news of his friend's death:

It was a friend through a text
Who told me you were next
    Of the one of us
    To be none of us

But he takes comfort in the fact that although death is inevitable for everyone, you have to live life while you can.

Oh no, we ain't sorry now
We're all one of us sooner or later
