Songfacts®:

  • This song was penned by Bob Dylan for Lone Justice and recorded by them for the B-side of their single, "Sweet, Sweet Baby (I'm Falling)." Bassist Marvin Etzioni told us in a 2013 interview that, "it was really a memorable day," when they laid it down, being so close to his hero. He recalled: "It was Dylan, Ron Wood from the Stones on lead, and Heffington from Justice. (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers founding member) Benmont Tench was on organ and piano, and then I was on bass. I was literally five feet away from him, just watching his hands. Because he doesn't tell you what the chords are - no discussion about anything. As soon as you set up and you're plugged in, you're pushing record, and you're on. And that's what we did. It was great."
  • There's an interesting side note regarding Lone Justice vocalist Maria McKee and Benmont Tench, who were dating at the time. McKee wrote a song "A Good Heart" about their relationship, which was recorded by former Undertones singer Feargal Sharkey as his third solo single. A hit in the UK, where it peaked at #1 for two weeks, it fared less well in the US, peaking at #74 on the Billboard Hot 100. Sharkey followed up the single with an answer record written by Tench, "You Little Thief", this time from his point of view. It was another hit for the ex Undertones vocalist in the UK, this time peaking at #5.
