Songfacts®:

  • In 2015, Lorde broke up with her longtime photographer boyfriend James Lowe. She decided that the Melodrama album would grapple with her emotions and insights stemming from the split. The first half of this two part song finds Lorde realizing their relationship had no future.

Three years, loved you every single day, made me weak, it was real for me, yup, real for me
Now I'll fake it every single day 'til I don't need fantasy, 'til I feel you leave

The second part describes Lode's emotions that followed the split as she wonders how her ex feels about her now.

Bet you wanna rip my heart out
Bet you wanna skip my calls now
Well guess what? I like that
  • Lorde wrote and produced Melodrama with Jack Antonoff of Bleachers and Fun. She recalled to The SpinOff:

"I was basically speed-dating different producers and songwriters in LA and hating it. And then I walked into a room with [Jack Antonoff] and just felt like home. I was like, 'Oh, yes. I want to be around you as long as I can and as much as possible.' We were just obsessed with each other."
  • Jack Antonoff also worked on 2017 albums released by Taylor Swift and St. Vincent. Asked by Entertainment Weekly what weird sound or instrument he is most proud of sneaking into a track in 2017, he replied: "There's a song on the Lorde album called 'Hard Feelings,' and there's this synth at the end that sounds like metal bending. I'm really proud of that."
  • That's Paul Simon saying "what is this tape?" at the start of the Loveless section. Lorde sampled it from a documentary about Graceland.
