Songfacts®:

  • Loretta Lynn can't take the pain of staying in a one-sided relationship. She sings:

Let me go please let me go you're hurtin' me
Stayin' here unwanted will be the death of me

She wrote the song with her assistant, Lorene Allen, as the two women dealt with their own doubts about their husbands' affections. "I don't believe we are the only women who doubt, at times, whether our man loves us or not," Lynn wrote in Honky Tonk Girl: My Life In Lyrics. "A woman needs to know. So we just put our heads together, with both of us feeling the same way. Since we couldn't ask the men that we loved, we just wrote what we felt in this song. It might help others to know that we've been there, too. We've all been there."
  • Allen co-wrote several of Lynn's songs, including her controversial hit "The Pill."
