  • In 1966, TIME magazine famously published a cover story asking, "Is God Dead?" Rather than deny the existence of a deity, the article explored society's shift away from traditional beliefs to a "more realistic, and somewhat more abstract, conception of God." The buzzworthy topic inspired Loretta Lynn to write the title tune from her 1968 gospel album. "At the time I wrote this song, there was lots of talk about God being dead," she recalled in the book Honky Tonk Girl: My Life In Lyrics. "I don't know why, 'cause even if you were out of your mind, how could you say God is dead? It was in the late '60s when it seemed the whole world was doing their thing. I thought, 'How sick can one get? 'Cause all I can say is the God I worship is very much alive.' Who says God is dead? Not me!"
