Songfacts®:

  • The Lovelytheband trio comprises lead singer Mitchy Collins, guitarist Jordan Greenwald, and drummer Sam Price; they formed in Los Angeles in 2016. Mitchy Collins is a former member of the folk-pop duo Oh Honey, who had a minor hit with "Be Okay" in 2013.

In July 2017, Lovelytheband released their debut single "Broken." The song took off, and by the following year it was leading Billboard's Alternative Songs airplay chart.
  • The song details two people who like each other. Because of their mutual attraction they are comfortable being their real broken selves instead of keeping their imperfections hidden. Mitchy Collins told Affinity that he penned the tune at a really low point in his life when he was feeling lost and confused and was heavily self-medicating.

"That song that came of it, luckily it birthed something beautiful," he explained. "It just ended up being a song about realizing that it's - I say it all the time - it's okay to not be okay. Everyone has their bad days, and everyone has their problems. Everyone has the stuff that they deal with that they don't like about themselves or wish they could change. It's just about embracing the person that you are and realizing that you're magical despite of it all. It's about realizing that no matter your flaws, there's someone out there that loves you and people out there that care about you."
  • Wondering why Lovelytheband? It was Mitchy Collins and Jordan Greenwald who came up with the group's moniker when they were sitting in a restaurant trying to come up with a cool name. They originally wanted to call themselves "Lovely", but that was already taken so the pair hit on Lovelytheband while eating wings at Dave and Buster's.
  • This was the #1 song of 2018 on Billboard's Alternative Songs chart.
