Songfacts®:

  • Loverboy guitarist Paul Dean wrote this song with Bernie Aubin, who was the band's original drummer. Just the second single for Loverboy (following "Turn Me Loose"), the song is about a burgeoning rock star who might become famous, but could also be just a flash in the pan.

The band's first concert was an opening gig for Kiss on November 19, 1979 in Calgary. After that though, they hit the bar circuit and played many of the songs that would appear on their new album. These shows gave the band a good idea of which tunes would find an audience, and "The Kid Is Hot Tonight" was one of the winners. In our interview with Paul Dean, he told us, "We were playing a little club out in Chilliwack, which is about 60 miles outside of town, one of those 'Let's go out there and catch stuff thrown at us' gigs. We played the first night, and the tune that got the best reaction was 'The Kid is Hot Tonight.' That was before we had 'Working For The Weekend.'"
