Songfacts®:

  • Lucy Dacus wrote this song about the cycle of boy-girl, man-woman, father-daughter abuse.

    Daniel in ten years
    Grabbing asses, spilling beers
Another ten and he'll have a daughter
She'll grow up and he can't stop her

Dacus told Pitchfork that once the abusive boys grow up and become fathers, they are protective of their daughters, knowing firsthand what men are capable of. It is, she explained, "The cycle of innocence to corruption to fear."
  • Dacus stayed up into the early hours writing the song on a little travel guitar she brings on tour. The singer told Apple Music she didn't think it would fit tonally on a record "because it's so campfire-ish." Dacus eventually included it on Home Video because she liked the meaning of it. She placed it as the track after "Thumbs" as it's "like a reprieve after the heaviest point on the record."
  • A dozen or so people contribute backing vocals, including Lucy Dacus' boygenius bandmates Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker, and Japanese-American singer-songwriter Mitski. Uncut magazine asked Dacus why she kept the studio chatter at the end of "Going Going Gone." She replied: "The song sounds a bit like a campfire sing along and I wanted to keep that campfire atmosphere of us all being in the same room when we recorded it."
  • We can't forget about another special guest performer: Julien Baker's dog, Beans. The hound mix is officially credited as one of the song's backing vocalists.
  • Home Video, Dacus' third album, is a nostalgic reflection on the singer's teen years growing up in Richmond, Virginia - which seemed a lifetime ago as the singer reluctantly transitioned into the limelight with her growing fame. Dacus earned a lot of critical acclaim after the release of her debut album, No Burden, in 2016 but she was still able to keep a pretty low profile and enjoy a private life in her hometown. That all changed when she released her sophomore effort, Historian, in 2018, the same year she formed the supergroup boygenius with Baker and Bridgers. When fans started showing up at her home, it scared her enough to relocate to Philadelphia.
