Songfacts®:

  • This is the lead single by the English singer-songwriter Lucy Spraggan, from her debut studio album. She co-wrote the song with former Celebrity Big Brother contestant and Ordinary Boys frontman Samuel Preston and Stiff Dylans vocalist James Flannigan. The track had its first airplay on Romeo's show on the Scottish InDemand radio station on May 20, 2013.

The song takes inspiratiion from Spraggan's journey across America at the age of 18. "Lighthouses are my good omen," she said. "When I was in the US and stuff went wrong, when I'd miss the last bus or I'd run out of money, I'd always see a lighthouse on a piece of paper, beer bottle or in real life then things would start getting better."

  • Lighthouses are structures carrying a powerful light to aid marine navigation. Amongst the earliest ones was the lighthouse built by Ptolemy Philadelphus on the island of Pharos, off Alexandria, Egypt about 280BC. It was about 450ft high, and according to the Roman historian Josephus, could be seen at a distance of 42 miles. Here's some more songs on our database that reference lighthouses.
    "The Water" by Feist.
"Birdhouse In Your Soul" by They Might Be Giants.
    "Lighthouse" by Westlife.
"I Want To Marry A Lighthouse Keeper" by Erika Eigen.
Also check out the video for "The Writer" by Ellie Goulding, which was filmed at Happisburgh Lighthouse in Norfolk.
And what the heck, here's "Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)" by Edison Lighthouse, who were a studio group named after the Eddystone Lighthouse off the coast of Cornwall.
