This is the first single from Luke Bryan's fourth studio album. He debuted the song at the 2013 ACM Awards on April 7, 2013, an event which Bryan also co-hosted.
While the song may have "Party" in the title, it's not necessarily a huge party tune. "It's actually a love song," explained Bryan, " about a guy telling a girl that, 'Hey-no matter what I'm doing, anytime, I could be at a bar, I could be at a big show, and you can text me or call me, and I'm dropping my party and we're getting together.' I think it's a cool way to tell a girl, 'Hey, I'm diggin' ya.'"
Bryan described this song to The Boot as being "almost like a mixture of '
Drunk On You' and [Lady Antebellum's] '
Need You Now' wrapped all into one."
The song was written by Rodney Clawson (Florida Georgia Line's "
Get Your Shine On") and Ashley Gorley (Carrie Underwood's "
Good Girl"). It was the first time the two Nashville tunesmiths had penned a song together. "I had that idea for a little while, and I was kind of saving it to write with the right person," Clawson told Roughstock. "It was the only time Ashley and I had ever written together, just the two of us. I threw that idea out, and he really jumped on it. With this song, we intentionally tried to not put trucks and tailgates and beer and all that into the song."
Clawson explained the song's meaning to Roughstock: "Some people have asked me if it's a 'booty call' song, but it's not really, I don't think," he said. "It's just telling a girl... hey, I like you so much that if you call me, I'll come to where ever you are or my door's open any time you want to come by because I want to see you, whether it's like two in the morning or if I'm in the front row of the best show ... if you call, I'm coming to meet you."
"We made it a little bit of a trick with the title," he continued. "When people see 'Crash My Party,' they think it's probably going to be a party song, but it's not. We were able to use a little bit of a deception there with the title."
Bryan was the only person that the pair pitched the song to and he immediately put it on hold. "Luckily we got the first single," said Clawson to Roughstock. "It's my only cut on the record. I think Ashley's got five other cuts on the record [laughs]. Luke's been really good to us. Ashley, more so than I, is really dialed into what Luke is wanting to do right now. I was just lucky enough that Ashley and I wrote that song, and it ended up being exactly what he was looking for."
Bryan explained why he titled the album after this cut. "I decided Crash My Party was perfect for this album because like the song, the album goes beyond the literal meaning of the title," he said. "The song isn't what you think it is, it is unexpected, and I think in the same way fans will definitely hear some surprises on my new album. It still reflects my sound but you will get to hear a little bit deeper, different side to me musically as well."
The music video was directed by Shaun Silva, and it features Bryan setting up a romantic dinner for his lovely lady, who is played by his real-life wife Caroline. The filming marked her music video debut. "I sat down with Caroline," Bryan recalled. "I was like, 'Do you want to be in the video?' She's like, 'If you want me to be in the video.'"
"We talked about the positives and negatives of her being in it," added the singer. "We kinda got to the point where I was like, 'I ain't gonna overthink it, you know. Come in the video. It'll be fun. It'll be a cool moment.' It was fun being out there on the set with her and sharing that video, and I think it was a real pretty moment visually to look at, and I think it gave me some ideas on being a little more romantic these days."
The Crash My Party album debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 selling 527,783 copies, making it the biggest sales debut for a country male artist since Tim McGraw's Live Like You Were Dying in 2004.
Crash My Party was named the ACM Album of the Decade. Luke Bryan was presented with the honor by the Academy of Country Music's RAC Clark during his set at the 11th annual Opry Goes Pink concert on October 22, 2019. The award was determined by more than 20 board members and the ACM Special Awards Committee.
