Songfacts®:

  • This steamy love song leaves little to the imagination as Luke Combs details his romantic intentions for his girl. After a busy time of work, he tells her to cancel their plans in favor of a passionate evening of lovemaking.
  • Luke Combs wrote "The Kind of Love We Make" in Montana with his guitar tech Jamie Davis and the Brothers Hunt (Dan and Reid Isbell). Davis used to be in a band with Dan Isbell. "Jamie had the idea, and Dan and Reid brought it to me and I thought it was a killer melody," said Combs. "It ended up being one of those songs that wrote itself. Dan, Reid and I are all having kids within a month of each other, so maybe this song had something to do with that."
  • Nashville songwriter Dan Isbell has helped Combs pen several of his songs, including "1, 2 Many," "Without You," and "Better Together."

For his brother Reid, this is his first Combs writing collaboration, though he appeared in the video for Jameson Rodgers and Combs' "Cold Beer Calling My Name."

Jamie Davis previously contributed to the writing of the What You See Ain't Always What You Get deluxe edition track "My Kinda Folk."
  • Combs released "The Kind of Love We Make" as a single from Growin' Up on June 17, 2022. It's his first radio single that's a baby-making song.
  • Luke Combs married Nicole Hocking in their southern Florida home on August 1, 2020. Nicole is often the muse for the country star's love songs ("Beautiful Crazy," "Better Together" and "Forever After All"), but this tune details the sultrier side of their marriage.
  • Luke Combs co-produced "The Kind of Love We Make" with Jonathan Singleton and Chip Matthews. Singleton previously co-produced the five bonus tracks on the What You See Ain't Always What You Get deluxe edition.
  • Matthews played percussion, and along with Sol Philcox-Littlefield, Rob McNelley and Singleton, the electric guitar. Matthews and Singleton also sang the backing vocals. The other musicians are:

    Pedal steel guitar: Travis Toy
    Keyboards: Jim "Moose" Brown
    Drums: Jerry Roe
    Bass: Steve Mackey
  • Tyler Adams directed the video, filming it at the local fire department in Dickson, Tennessee. The clip tells the story of a paramedic and a firefighter drawn together through a historic fire.
  • So what does Nicole think of the song? "She was like, 'Geez,' and she gave me one of those eye rolls," Combs told Billboard with a chuckle. "We have a great relationship and we're totally not afraid to make fun of each other either. We get a lot of laughs out of stuff like that. She's great. She just takes everything with a grain of salt."
  • Wearing his signature black shirt and baseball cap, Luke Combs delivered a heartfelt performance of "The Kind of Love We Make" at the 2022 CMA Awards. The singer picked up the Entertainer of the Year trophy and the Album of the Year prize for Growin' Up, making Combs the first person to win the two accolades on the same night since Taylor Swift in 2009.
