  • This lighthearted anthem finds Luke Combs singing of riding a lucky steak after getting dumped.

Well I've been on one hell of a redneck roll
    For three weeks now
And it all started on the day that she walked out

Combs inverts the old woe-is-me phrase on this tongue-in-cheek tune with a sharp twist.
  • Combs co-wrote the treatment for the song's music video with director Tyler Adams. He called in his best friends from his Charleston, South Carolina, high school to appear in the clip.

"Every night on tour when we start playing 'When It Rains It Pours,' you can feel the fans kick it up a notch," the singer explained.

"It's just a fun song and I always think 'Damn, I kinda wanna be this guy in the song. He's got it figured out.' So for the video, I convinced my buddies to meet me in Charleston, we traced the footsteps of the song for two days at the beach and somehow they let us film it as an official music video," he added. "I hope the fans have as much fun watching this as we had making it."
  • Luke Combs penned the song with frequent writing partner Ray Fulcher and Jordan Walker of the duo Walker McGuire. He recalled to The Boot the session that produced the track:

"I don't know if there's necessarily a personal side to it as much [as] it was a good story we wrote. I had the title in my phone; I keep titles in my phone. It was just one of those things where I came in and had the title, 'When It Rains It Pours.'

I thought it was going to be a sad song. Jordan Walker was like, 'Why don't we make it a fun, not sad, thing?' So me and Jordan and Ray wrote it, and it turned out great.

We tried to have fun with it and write it in a '90s, early-Brad Paisley kind of song, is what we were going for with that thing. Luckily, in my opinion, we nailed it. People seem to love it so far."
  • The song became Luke Combs' first Country #1 when it climbed to the top of the chart dated November 25, 2017.
  • The genesis of the song arose when Combs and Fulcher spotted Walker having a beer at a Nashville bar. "They come up, we start talking, we're having a couple beers and Luke goes, 'Well I like your music, the Walker McGuire music that I've heard," Walker explained to Taste of Country. "And he was like, 'I'd love to write with you one day if we could.' So we left the bar right then and went to my house, pulled out a couple guitars and a six pack and started writing."
  • Walker recalled how Combs seemed to be distracted by his ex-girlfriend during their songwriting session. "The idea kind of fell out, but the whole time we were writing the first verse, he was texting his ex-girlfriend and I just kept going, 'Dude should we just not write and just got back to the bar?' Like I know how this goes, and he's like, 'No, we're going to write a song,'" he remembered. "And then it hit me - I was like, 'We should write a song about her,' and he was like, 'No, no, no that'll make her so mad.'"

"And then it clicked, he was like, 'Wow dude, we should write a song just to make her mad,'" Walker continued, laughing.
  • Luke Combs, Ray Fulcher and Jordan Walker took a fun-loving approach to writing "When It Rains It Pours":

"We were talking about how we've all been in a situation where you don't realize you want to get out [of a relationship] until you do, and we played on that," Combs explained to reporters. "I don't think these things have to be horrible all the time. I'm sure it's always terrible for someone, but we wanted to have fun with it."
Fulcher added, "There's so many songs about heartbreak in the world - some great ones, don't get me wrong - but we wanted to do something tongue-in-cheek, something danceable. Don't tell a sad story - tell a good story."
