Madison Beer was born in Jericho, New York, to Robert Beer, a real estate developer, and Tracie, an interior designer who recorded YouTube covers on the weekends from her home. Her parents divorced when she was 7.
Beer began her career as a child model. She appeared on the cover of Child magazine at age 4 and modeled for several other brands, including Guess and Abercrombie & Fitch.
In 2012, Beer began posting cover videos of popular songs on YouTube. Her videos quickly gained popularity, and she soon caught the attention of Justin Bieber, who posted a link to a video of Beer singing Etta James's "At Last."

"13 years old!" Bieber tweeted. "She can sing #future star."
Madison Beer left Island Records in 2015. She said she felt trapped by the "Disney queen" image the label was trying to create for her, so she went independent and released her debut EP, As She Pleases, in 2018. She released her debut studio album, Life Support, three years later.
Alongside her music career, Beer has also appeared in several films and television shows. She made her acting debut in the 2013 film Louder Than Words and has also appeared in RuPaul's Drag Race and Todrick.
When Beer was 16, nude videos of her were leaked online, accompanied by some vicious online hate. The incident contributed to her developing PTSD and attempting suicide twice.
Beer is open about her struggles with mental health and has stated that social media and the internet have contributed to them. She sang about these issues on her 2019 single "Dear Society."

"Reading comments is obviously something I'm used to," she told UK newspaper The Sun, "but whenever you feel s--tty about yourself, and then you go and read that other people think you're s--tty too, it doesn't feel very good."
Madison Beer's memoir, The Half of It, was released on April 25, 2023. In it, Beer discusses her life in the spotlight, her mental health struggles, and her journey to self-love. She also writes about her experience being sexually assaulted as a child, and how she has overcome the trauma.

"I really wanted to write this book now because I thought sharing some of the ups and downs in my life might be able to help other people navigate and relate," she told People.
She grew up online, but Beer treasures solitude. She often spends nights reading, cooking, or simply listening to old playlists by candlelight. "People think I'm always in a studio or a crowd," she told Audacy. "But I'm happiest in silence, it's when I feel most like me."
Beer's studio sessions are almost pitch black, lit only by a small lamp or candle. It helps her "block out the noise of being self-conscious," she told Audacy, and feel like she's "singing from somewhere private." Her engineer once joked that recording with her feels "like tracking vocals in a dream sequence."
