Songfacts®:

  • Madness frontman Suggs told The Sun May 22, 2009 that this song," is a very serious song about being treated like an idiot. A universal theme."
  • Saxophonist Lee Thompson told Q magazine November 2012 that he wrote the song about himself and his friend Bobby Townshend. Criminals at 12, they thieved and burgled until dispatched to separate reform schools in 1971-73. Townshend never changed and died in poverty, with Thompson one of three mourners at the funeral.
