Songfacts®:

  • Their 30th singles chart release in Britain, "Lovestruck" was released in August 1999 to coincide with the 20th anniversary of Madness' first UK Top 20 hit "The Prince." When it hit the UK Top 10 it became their biggest hit since 1983. The subsequent album Wonderful was their first album of new material since the group disbanded in 1988.
  • Aside from the obvious themes of lost and unrequited love, the song and it's video are a comedic look at the binge-drinking culture that began to grip the United Kingdom in the late 1990s.
  • The line "Lovestruck, I've fallen for a lamppost" was believed by many music critics of the era to have been inspired by Simon & Garfunkel's "The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)" from 1966, which featured the line "Hello, lamppost! Wat'cha knowing?" though the band never commented on this.
  • Madness reunion proved short-lived, as neither of the two follow-up releases from the Wonderful album made the UK Top 40. In 2002-2003, however, the musical Our House - based on Madness' songs from their early days between 1979 and 1985, won an Olivier award for best new musical, with frontman Graham "Suggs" MacPherson playing the role of the central character's father. >>>

  • Dave from Cardiff, WalesGreat song, hilarious video with it's theme of Suggs "falling in love" with a lamp-post! Classic Madness, they could always be relied on to put out a catchy song with a funny video, and this was no exception, even after over a decade out of the limelight!
