Songfacts®:

  • This song is about people being slaves to their egos. Madonna explained: "'Voices' is about people playing mind games and who go on ego trips."
  • This was co-written by Justin Timberlake in the first chunk of time he had with Madonna. JT worked on four other tracks on the album, including the first single, "4 Minutes."
  • Madonna: "The line, 'Are you walking the dog or is the dog walking you?' - it's like, who's in control here? These last two songs (This and 'Devil Wouldn't Recognize You') really make you think and there's something very orchestral and lush about them. We started out light with 'Candy Store' and ended in a thoughtful way with 'Voices.' I think it was a good journey to go on."

  • Leo from Westminster 1, MdAs church bells toll, brilliant ballad Voices has the absolute best ending to any Madonna record. Madge wrote a litle masterpice concerto art song with her friend Justin and the tune is a sharp reply to all the men who have done Maddy wrong in her life-I won't name name names because I know who they are! After all these years, Lady Ciccone is still the master of thoughtful and intelligent adult-oriented rock (AOR). Madonna knows how to dance, sing and cry and Voices is a beautiful and intellgent mixture of both her dance and ballad impulses because that's how her best music is-a brilliant combination of the two song types-all done with a Detroit rock & roll heart. Michigan's Evita Queen Lady has another winner on her hands. Once again,
    Madonna delivers
