Songfacts®:

  • Nasri Atweh sings about going out for a romantic evening with his girl. Asked by Jam! Music if there was a particular person who inspired the lyrics, Nasri replied: "Yes – every woman in the world who takes forever to get ready. My lady, she takes forever, man. It's the weirdest thing. And then it's like, 'OK, are you ready?' And she looks absolutely gorgeous, and then I'm like 'OK, let's take it off.' And then you forget that you're hungry."
  • The color red has been associated with fertility since time immemorial and women are thought to have painted their lips red as early as 10,000 B.C The red dress effect is a phenomenon in which women who wear red clothing are perceived to be more sexually appealing than they are when wearing other colors. Other artists that have sung of ladies clothed in red include Chris De Burgh, Joel Crouse and Lucy Hale.
  • Nasri told iHeartRadio the story of the song: "'Red Dress" was an idea that I had started with a friend of ours named Hayley Gene Penner, [who] is a very talented songwriter, and it was just sitting in the computer and it was this whole other thing. I was like, 'Oh, this is really good.'

I played it for Alex [Tanas, percussion] and was like, 'What do you think?' We re-worked it and re-worked the verses and then everybody started adding their parts. It just became this whole other reggae-infused Magic! song."
