Malcolm Todd is an American singer-songwriter known for blending alternative R&B, indie, and punk influences. His birth name is Malcolm Todd Hobert.
Malcolm Todd was raised in Santa Monica, California. His father, Tim Hobert, is a television scriptwriter whose work includes the sitcom The Middle. His mother has a background in musical theater.
Growing up, he was introduced to Broadway musicals by his mom. The family often listened to Broadway soundtracks like Into The Woods, The Book of Mormon, and Wicked together.
His sister, Audrey Hobert, is best friends with singer Gracie Abrams and has contributed to Abrams' music and videos, co-writing the songs "I Love You, I'm Sorry" and "That's So True."
Todd was part of his high school's jazz band, playing multiple instruments. During COVID, he learned to play the guitar by studying YouTube videos. He released his first song, "Demos Before Prom," in his senior year of high school.
After graduating from high school in 2022, he took a gap year to pursue music, with the support of his parents. Todd scooped ice cream for a living while promoting his music on TikTok. He released his debut EP, Demos Before Prom, the same year and went viral on TikTok in 2023 with his singles "Art House" and "Roommates."
His first live show was a sold-out performance at Winston House in Venice, Los Angeles, in July 2023.
Todd frequently injects humor and a lightheartedness into his music and public persona, as seen in the playful costume changes and self-mockery of his "Comfort Me" video.
Todd enjoys watching sports documentaries and has cited them as a source of inspiration for his work ethic and creative outlook. He told Atwood magazine the way athletes "carry themselves and how much they care, no matter how much money is involved, inspired me to just work on giving my 100%."
