Songfacts®:

  • The music was written by Erno Rapee, the lyrics by Lew Pollack in 1926 and the song was published in 1927. It was originally composed for the 1926 silent movie What Price Glory.
  • Ango-Italian band leader Mantovani was experimenting with different styles, when his arranger Ronald Binge had the idea for Mantovani's dramatic "Cascading Strings" effect, which the 2 first employed on his version of this song. Mantovani used a 40 piece orchestra for this, including 29 string players. >>>

  • Charmagne from NjI was the first baby born in NJ TO be named Charmagne. nov 1947
  • Steve from Whittier, CaThis recording was used in "The Green Mile", as well as others.
  • Charmaine from Brevard, FlMy father told me he danced to this song (don't know by who back then) during WWII while stationed in France. When he came home he told my mother some day he would name a daughter of his "Charmaine". I feel so proud to have that name and when I hear the song, it so reminds me of my father and France. I had the chance to go to Paris a few years ago and over to Normandy. I felt so humble standing at the American Cemetary and knowing my father fought there. I thank the vets everyday and my father. Mantovani's version of Charmaine is simply beautiful!!
