Songfacts®:

  • This melancholic song was partly inspired by a former relationship. "My co-writers and I wrote it in under an hour and it was just flowing out of us because we had all experienced it at one point in our lives," Morris told Wide Open Country. "That song was really special to me even though it was heartbreaking; it ended up rounding out the EP really well for me because it combines all of my musical influences and it's just one of the most honest songs on the EP."
  • The song features a guitar part by the Brothers Osborne's John Osborne, who Morris had met before either had found success.
  • The song was later included on Maren Morris' debut album, Hero. It was one of the track's' lyrics that helped her generate the record's name. She explained to Taste of Country: "It says in the chorus of that song, 'I'm not the hero in this story.' I just think about the headspace I was in the day I wrote that song, where I'm basically having to end a relationship and be the bad guy and how far I've come since that day."

"It's really been this long journey to be able to say that I've become my own hero," Morris added. "This album really reflects every moment of that journey."
