  • Maren Morris uses traditional gospel terminology here to communicate her love for music:

When I play the highway FM
    I find my soul revival
    Singing every single verse
Yeah I guess that’s my church

Morris got the inspiration for the song while in her car. She told Genius: "I get a lot of my songwriting done while driving around Nashville - sometimes it comes to me that way. I tried to write about that feeling, that connection."
  • The song's music video was filmed in the outskirts of Austin, Texas, with director Rachel McDonald at the helm. "It was the coolest experience of my life getting to shoot my first music video in Texas during the most beautiful week," Morris told Wide Open Country. "It was a great homage to my home state. And I do think in my heart of hearts I'll end up back in Texas, whether it's a home or whatever; I've always loved Austin. But Nashville has been an amazing home for me the past several years."
  • Maren Morris penned the cut with the songwriter busbee (Rascal Flatts' "Summer Nights," Hunter Hayes' "Storm Warning") in early 2015.
  • The day before the writing appointment at busbee's studio in Los Angeles' Glassell Park neighborhood, Morris was both emotional from a recent breakup and frustrated by her lack of a solid idea. So, she went for a drive with the radio turned up. "I was trying to find Santa Monica, and I just headed west, wherever that would take me, [and I] finally hit the water. I just remember seeing the ocean, having a good song on, and it was just the soundtrack for this cathartic moment in my life," Morris explained on CBS' Sunday Morning program. "I just remember thinking to myself, 'This is like church to me.'"
  • Morris expanded on the background to the song, during an interview with Billboard magazine: "I was really thankful just to be out of Nashville for a second," she recalled. "I was driving around, and all of a sudden it just hit me - the title, 'My Church,' popped in my mind. I was maybe looking for some sort of salvation in that moment on that writing trip. It was an escape for me - and not really a religious one, just something to get out of my own head."

"Country music is my religion in a way," Morris added. "That's what I grew up listening to. When you think about Johnny Cash's 'Sunday Morning Coming Down' and Hank Williams - where do I even begin with his catalog? - it's church to me. And I know it is for a lot of other people, too."
  • The McCrary Sisters provided gospel harmonies for the cut in a session recorded at Nashville's Sound Emporium. "It's sort of full circle for me," said Morris, "because they've sung on Johnny Cash songs, and to have them singing backup for a song that mentions him, uh, yeah."
  • Maren Morris made her Saturday Night Live debut on the December 10, 2016 episode of the late-night sketch comedy show. She performed both this song and "80's Mercedes."
  • Billboard magazine named this as their Top Country Song of 2016. They wrote:

"Morris' breakthrough hit might be our top pick even without her jaw-dropping CMA performance of the song. But, that only put the exclamation point on the fact that she was the talent to break through this year."
  • This song earned Morris the Grammy for Best Country Solo Performance at the 2017 ceremony, where she performed her song "Once" with Alicia Keys.
  • Until Morris penned "My Church" with busbee, her interest lay in songwriting rather than performing. She told American Songwriter how this song changed everything. "It just kind of rekindled this flame in me of wanting to be the one [in front of] the microphone," she said. "I just couldn't hear someone else singing that song. I think that's the song that broke the levy. I felt very protective of it and wanted to sing it myself."

They all passed on her-didn’t air her auditions. Now her songs are covered on these shows! Maren Morris is one of my favorite country artists.
