Songfacts®:

  • "Nervous" is a bluesy rocker where Maren Morris sings about her infatuation with her lover and the butterflies he makes her feel.

You take me in my feelings
    Through the ceiling
    Leaving my inhibitions exposed
    You make me nervous
  • Morris co-wrote "Nervous" alongside her Highwomen bandmate Natalie Hemby and "The Bones" collaborator Jimmy Robbins.

Hemby had the original idea for "Nervous" and approached her co-writers with it. When they met together, Robbins came up with an electric guitar lick. "We went with that and it felt really roughed up," Morris explained to Audacy. "We didn't want to keep anything too slick with the production or the vocal. And it just felt like okay, let's lean into this. Like really sexual, empowering vibe of being like, you make me nervous. But like, how am I going to describe all the imagery, laden ways that you do this?"

"I just feel like writing with Natalie always brings out the most colorful lyrics," Morris added. "We definitely went there on this song."
  • When it came to laying down her vocals, Morris stepped into the booth and really wailed. "It was the first time I felt like I took the training wheels off in a long time and just got to belt it," she said.
  • Morris recorded "Nervous" for her third major label studio album, Humble Quest. Greg Kurstin produced the song along with all the other tracks on the record. The producer previously collaborated with Morris on "Girl" and "The Bones."
