Songfacts®:

  • Carey recorded this song for Disney's The Wizard of Oz prequel, Oz, the Great and Powerful. "'Almost Home' has a message that works beautifully with the film," said the singer. "It's a feel-good record, evoking the feeling of reaching your home and being with people that you love."

Previous contributions by Carey for movies include "When You Believe" for The Prince of Egypt as well the soundtrack for her own much-panned film Glitter.
  • The song was written by Carey with American songwriter Simone Porter, Canadian writer-producer Justin Gray and indie singer-songwriter Lindsey Ray. It was co-produced by the songstress with Stargate and released as a single on February 19, 2013.
  • Famed photographer and artist David LaChapelle directed the song's music video, which also features Carey as well as characters from Oz, the Great and Powerful. LaChapelle previously helmed the clip for Carey's 2001 single "Loverboy" as well as shooting some of singer's album covers.
  • Carey told VH1's Big Morning Buzz Live that her twins, Moroccan and Monroe, inspired her to write the song. "I've always just loved Disney, and now especially having two little babies," she said, "like all we do is watch animated movies, even though they're so little, they still love them, especially Roc, my little boy."

  • Dj Michaelangelo from Grand Rapids, MiIn a 2018 interview with Alex Frank from Pitchfork magazine, Mariah herself had this to say about the Almost Home song:

'I love to collaborate with people, but in the rare instances when I’ve done other people’s songs, I haven’t liked it. There was a Disney song I did five, six years ago called “Almost Home,” and I never really liked it. No offense to whoever wrote it, and I did it because Disney wanted me to do it, but it didn’t feel like me at all.'
