Songfacts®:

  • "In The Good Old Times" was written by Fred Gilbert - who went on to write the monster hit "The Man Who Broke The Bank At Monte Carlo."

According to the Richard Baker biography of the music hall star, this was the first song Marie Lloyd ever sang as a solo performer, under her real name Matilda Wood. Her debut was at the Eagle music hall in 1885, but unfortunately like her second song, "The Boy I Love Is Up in the Gallery," it was "owned" by another singer. Jessie Acton was not amused, but wrote Baker, Marie soon smoothed their ruffled feathers, and found other songs to sing." >>>
