Songfacts®:

  • The introspective lyrics find Marina Diamandis singing about regretting the mistakes she has made in life and struggling to let go:

Cause I have lived my life in debt
I've spent my days in deep regret
Yeah, I've been living in the red
But I wanna forgive and forget

Marina is determining to look at things in a different perspective. make peace with her past, and move on.
  • Asked by Spin about the lyric "I was born to be the tortoise, I was born to walk alone," Marina replied: "I felt like I was always rushing through life. I felt I was lagging behind, particularly in my career."

"I think I just wasn't very happy as myself," she continued. "I just didn't feel good enough and I never felt like I was progressing in the way that I wanted to, whereas now I feel completely black and white. Sometimes you're the tortoise and sometimes you're the hare. Sometimes people you know explode on their first album. I'm sure in your industry, you know what I mean, you'll have mates that have gone really far, but really quickly, and you feel like, "'Well, when is that going to happen for me?' So that's very connected to that, but 'I was born to walk alone,' that was more about doing things on my own and being independent and creatively so as well. It's about growing up and looking after yourself. It sounds really basic, but it is. If you don't like yourself, you're not going to look after yourself."

Marina is alluding to Aesop's fable where a race between a hare and a tortoise is won by the plodding tortoise; the moral being "slow and steady wins the race."
  • The accompanying music video was directed by Markus Lundqvist, who was also the man behind the lens for Marina Diamandis' "I'm a Ruin" clip. It finds the Welsh singer wearing black and white outfits in two separate tableaux on opposite sides of a circular stage.
