Songfacts®:

  • This dreamy song finds Marina criticizing the oppressive treatment of women throughout history. The singer concludes on the chorus she does not "want to live in a man's world anymore."
  • During the second verse Marina takes issue with one particular man's attitude towards LGBT individuals.

    Marilyn's bungalow it's number seven
In the pink palace where men made her legend
Owned by a sheik who killed thousands of gay men
I guess that's why he bought the Campest Hotel in LA then

Hassanal Bolkiah, Sultan of Brunei, owns the Beverly Hills Hotel, which includes a bungalow where Marilyn Monroe used to stay. In 2019, he implemented legislation that introduced the death penalty by stoning for homosexuality.
  • Written solely by Marina in August 2019, she explained to Vogue she was inspired by the shifts in attitudes towards misogynism and homophobia. "The original idea for the song was to write a snapshot of how women and LGBTQ+ individuals have been subjugated and discriminated against throughout history going back to the Salem witch trials, where any person who was deemed abnormal or slightly alternative was singled out," Marina said. "Those kinds of patterns are still present in society. That's something inspiring to me and worth writing about."
  • Marina completed the song in February 2020 and planned its release to coincide with her appearance at Coachella two months later, but COVID put paid to that. She eventually dropped it as her first single from her fifth album on November 18, 2020.
  • Marina put her money where her mouth is by hiring an entirely female team to record the track. It was produced by Jenn Decilveo (Andra Day's "Rise Up," Rixton's "Wait On Me," Anne-Marie's "Ciao Adios") and engineered by Emily Lazar, who was the first female winner of the Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical Grammy for Beck's album Colors.
  • The songstress also recruited an all-female creative team, filmmaker/photographers Alexandra Gavillet and Coughs, for the vibrant, colorful video. Marina came up with the treatment in March 2020, inspired by the neoclassicism movement of the 19th century, particularly the paintings of English artist John William Godward. She told Vogue:

"They use these very modern color compositions like mint green with chartreuse or magenta. That was the center of the whole video and the main visual inspiration."
