Songfacts®:

  • Marina's Greek father was born and raised on the Ionian island of Lefkada. The island lies just off the west coast of Greece and is connected to the mainland by a long causeway and floating bridge. The singer's parents met at Newcastle University and separated when Marina was four years old. Following the separation, her father returned to Lefkada.
  • Marina spent two years living on the Greek island between the ages of 16 and 18 and often returns there. Here, she pays homage to Lefkada, which is part of her heritage.

    Flowers in my hair
    I belong by the sea
Where we used to be, sittin' by the orange trees
Summer in the air, bodies in the heat
Just you and me, sittin' by the orange trees

Marina explained in a press release that Lefkada is a part of her very core. "It's my favorite place in the world," she said. "I always feel at peace there. It's like my body recognizes I'm back home."
  • The song's music video was directed by Sophie Muller, who also filmed the visuals for Marina's "Handmade Heaven." The clip finds the singer returning too the Ionian island where her father is from.
