Songfacts®:

  • Marina explained to Amazon that this brooding search through loss of identity is, "About emptiness, a void that you can't fill with relationships."
  • The song title refers to Jacqueline Susann's book of the same name, which is one of the best selling novels of all time having sold 30 million copies. It is the racy story of three women trying to make it in showbiz, but getting involved in sex, drugs and scandal. ("Dolls" being a slang term for downers, mood-altering drugs). Marina based the lyrics on the 1967 film version about the drug-addicted, unfulfilled actresses.
