Songfacts®:

  • This short number written in 3/4 time is also known as "Drink! Drink! Drink!" or "Drinking Song (Drink! Drink! Drink!)"... and is arguably the world's most famous drinking song. With music by Sigmund Romberg and lyrics by the actress and librettist Dorothy Donnelly, it is the second song in Act II of Romberg's most successful work, The Student Prince, an operetta that ran for 608 performances, making it the longest running Broadway show of the Roaring '20s.

In the 1954 film version it was performed (ostensibly) by Edmund Purdom, but the voice was actually that of Mario Lanza. On occasion it has been performed by Blackmore's Night, not by Candice Night but by keyboard player David Baranowski. >>>

  • This was featured in a bit on The Muppet Show in season 5. In the episode, Kermit the Frog challenges The Muppet Theatre's cantankerous balcony dwellers, Statler and Waldorf, to run the show. The program goes awry when they book The Berlin National Opera Company and instead get The Salzburg Sauerkraut Singers, a quartet of pigs who commence singing the "Drinking Song" while slinging sauerkraut.
