Songfacts®:

  • Here, Adam Levine sings about some of the stupid things he's done in the past that have ruined relationships. As he reflects on his "Beautiful Mistakes" he imagines lying in bed with his naked ex.
  • Megan Thee Stallion contributes a verse and chorus, during which she addresses her boyfriend. He too has slipped up one too many times, and she warns him that he's "runnin outta chances."
  • Megan's contribution finds the Texan revealing her vocal talent as well as her rapping skills. Levine and Megan recorded their vocals separately because of COVID. When they finally met in person to film the video, he told her that when she switches from rapping to singing, she reveals a versatility that people haven't heard before. "The way she built her part was just, it couldn't have been a more epic kind of climax for the song," he told Apple Music's Zane Lowe. "I mean, it really is absolutely perfect. So, I mean, what she did was just miraculous, and it brought the song to a whole new level."
  • Considering they are a pop-rock band, Maroon 5 has quite a history of working with rappers. Past collaborations include:

    Wiz Khalifa ("Payphone")
    Kendrick Lamar ("Don't Wanna Know")
    A$AP Rocky ("Whiskey")
    Future ("Cold")
    Cardi B ("Girls Like You")
  • Levine told Zane Lowe that Blackbear of "Hot Girl Bummer" fame expressed an interest in writing a song with Maroon 5 while they were spending the summer in New York. The result was this trap-pop number, which they penned with Blackbear's go-to writing partner, Andrew Goldstein, along with Megan Thee Stallion, Joe Kirkland of American power pop band Artist vs. Poet, and frequent Maroon 5 collaborator Jacob Kasher.

Blackbear and Goldstein produced the song.
  • Directed by Sophie Muller, the animated video finds Adam Levine taking a drive past archetypal LA landmarks in an old-school pink Cadillac while reflecting on his ex. The clip turns it into a surreal fantasy with a colorful world of flying cars and a dreamlike narrative before Megan hops in beside Levine to share the ride.
