Songfacts®:

  • Adam Levine is upset because his lover is freezing him out emotionally and he feels that he doesn't know her anymore:

    Distant
    When we're kissing
    Feel so different
Baby, tell me how did you get so cold

The Maroon 5 frontman is just playing a part; in real life he's happily married to Victoria Secret's model Behati Prinsloo.
  • Future finds his way onto the moody, bass-heavy track rapping about his lost love on the third verse.

Never thought that you were like this
I took the tag off and made you priceless
I just spent half a mill' on a chandelier
Now you tryna cut me off like a light switch, yeah
    .

It has been suggested that Future could be addressing his ex-fiancé Ciara.
  • The song was Maroon 5's second consecutive rap-assisted single following the Kendrick Lamar featuring "Don't Wanna Know."
  • Maroon 5 performed the song on television for the first time on the February 15, 2017 episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
  • The trippy video was directed by Rich Lee, who also shot Maroon 5's clip for "Love Somebody." It stars Adam Levine and his wife Behati Prinsloo also has a cameo.

The clip finds Levine experiencing a psychedelic trip after accepting an invitation to Future's party and getting his whiskey dosed with acid. "Listen, I'll only make a video that's sexy if a) my wife's on board with whatever we're doing, and b) literally, I have to be," he told Ellen. "I have to go to a party reluctantly, and then I have to get drugged somehow."
