Visually, Marshmello is known for his marshmallow-shaped helmet - he never makes a public appearance without it. He wears it because, as he wrote in a tweet, "I don't want or need fame. I'm genuinely trying to create something positive for people to connect with."
Marshmello's real name is Christopher Comstock. He started out unmasked, using the name Dotcom. In 2014 he found a following under that name, but when he became Marshmello in 2015, Dotcom went away.
He started making music using GarageBand when he got his first Mac around age 10. He later switched to Ableton.
He grew up outside of Philadelphia but moved to Los Angeles to start his music career. When he got there, he found himself all alone, which inspired his first hit, "Alone," released in 2016.
The name Marshmello comes from his mellow style. From there, he came up with the helmet gimmick with his manager.
Some of Marshmello's most famous songs include "Happier" with Bastille, "Wolves" with Selena Gomez, and "Bye Bye" with Juice WRLD.
For years, he refused to talk in interviews but would participate in bits where hosts would ask him questions that he would answer by drawing or giving thumbs up or down. This allowed him to promote his songs and sets without having to find the right words to answer questions. That took a lot of pressure off him and let him keep his focus on music. Marshmello did do a brief Q&A in 2022 where he spoke, and in 2025 he sat down for a two-hour interview with Daniel Wall.
Marshmello points out that singers grow up performing on stage but DJ/producers grow up working alone on computers, so it shouldn't be surprising that he keeps private. "As producers we had to exile ourselves and really nerd out," he said on Behind The Wall. "It doesn't put you in social situations until you make it."
His first helmet he made himself using a yoga mat, pantyhose (for the eyes) and some lights powered by a 9-volt battery. These days, his helmets are made from carbon fiber and are a lot more comfortable. He had to lose the lights to make it lighter.
The EDM community sussed out his identity around 2016, but Forbes let the cat all the way out of the bag by publishing a story about it in 2017. They simply traced the credits to his song, which had Christopher Comstock listed as a writer.
Yes, Marshmello has pitched marshmallows. In 2021 he teamed up with Stuffed Puffs to promote their chocolate-filled marshmallows. He starred in a commercial where he shows up at a family campfire in a truck blaring "Happier," his hit with Bastille.
Marshmello made a gazillion dollars (OK, probably around $2 million) doing an in-game Fortnite concert on February 2, 2019 that drew 10.7 virtual concertgoers, a record at the time for video game attendance. These kind of concerts grew in scope during the pandemic, with Travis Scott drawing 12.3 million in 2021.
He got in on the YeeDM action with productions for country stars like Kane Brown ("One Thing Right," "Miles On It") and Jelly Roll ("Holy Water"). YeeDM is a kind of EDM-country hybrid.
