Songfacts®:

  • Lone Justice were an American Country-Rock group formed in 1982 by guitarist Ryan Hedgecock and singer Maria McKee. It was his seeing an acoustic set by Hedgecock and McKee in the summer '82 that led to Brooklyn-born bassist Marvin Etzioni being brought into the nascent band. Lone Justice earned rave reviews for their early gigs and their self-titled debut appeared in 1985. The record was a critical success but failed to sell and Hedgecock, Etzioni and drummer Don Heffington all left, leaving McKee to lead Lone Justice alone. After recording one more LP, McKee disbanded the band to pursue a solo career, achieving a #1 UK hit in 1990 with the ballad "Show Me Heaven" from the Days of Thunder soundtrack. Etzioni, meanwhile has had continued success as a songwriter (The Williams Brothers' "Can't Cry Hard Enough") and as a producer for such artists as Toad the Wet Sprocket and Peter Case.
  • This track from Etzioni's 2012 double album Marvin Country! sees him reuniting with McKee, one of several guests on the set. Etzioni told us that he originally only planned to have Buddy Miller guesting on the set, but after recording this song and playing it to McKee, "she said, 'Oh, I love that song.'" When McKee added her vocals, "it was like, Okay, this is a lot better with her than with me alone. Just one of those magical moments when she walked in the studio. It took us longer to drive to the studio than for her to record her vocal."
