Songfacts®:

  • In 1964, Motown hoped to bolster Marvin Gaye's image by pairing him with an established hit-maker. Enter Mary Wells, the newly crowned teen Queen of Motown whom the label was trying to keep in the public eye (she would have worldwide success with "My Guy" later that year). Gaye and Wells seemed like the perfect match. The pair recorded the album Together and scored top-twenty hits with "What's the Matter With You Baby" and "Once Upon a Time." Unfortunately, Wells decided to leave Motown for less-than-greener pastures, never to record with Gaye again.
