Songfacts®:

  • Marvin Sapp wrote this as a tribute after his father's death.
  • This spent 46 weeks at the top of the American Gospel radio charts. Its long reign on top meant it became the longest running #1 radio single of any format.
  • In the 1990s Marvin Sapp recorded with the gospel group Commissioned, before leaving to embark on a solo career. He now combines his singing with being the pastor of Lighthouse Full Life Center Church, in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
  • This record-breaking tune was the first song by a gospel artist to sell over 1 million ringtones.
  • This song topped The Associated Press list of Best Songs of 2008.
  • Sapp was responsible for handling his father's funeral and burial. He explained to AOL that this song was created by divine inspiration the Sunday after his father's burial right in the pulpit of his church: Said Sapp: "The Lord said to me, 'Marvin, there's something you need to understand. Although your father isn't with you physically, I will never leave you nor will I forsake you. I will be with you always even until the end of the earth'. Then I walked into the pulpit with my Bible. When God began to assure me that He was there for me, I stood up. I grabbed the microphone and started singing, 'Never Would Have Made It'."

  • Donna from Rutherford, NjI've never really listened to gospel but I caught the video on BET and I fell in love with this song. It's a great tribute to a loved one and so heartfelt.
