Songfacts®:

  • This won the Eurovision Song Contest for Spain in 1968, but not without some controversy. In a 2008 documentary, producer Montse Fernandez Vila alleged that Spanish dictator Francisco Franco bought votes to ensure that this song won the competition. The UK entry Cliff Richard's "Congratulations" was the favorite to win the music contest, but came second by one vote.
  • The song was originally to have been sung by Joan Manuel Serrat, but as she would only sing it in Catalan, Massiel was a late replacement.
  • The song contains 138 "la"s.
  • Massiel (born María de los Ángeles Santamaría Espinosa) was one of the most popular singing stars both in Spain and across Latin America.
