Songfacts®:

  • This song, along with the rest of the album, was produced by Nick Launay [Talking Heads, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Kate Bush, Nick Cave]. Clash Magazine January 2009 asked frontman Paul Smith why the band decided to hook up with Launay. He replied: "We approached him due to his work with Nick Cave, especially the Grinderman record, which manages to sound raw and dirty as well as having a fun side to it, with the vocal pulling you through the madness. Added to that, he's worked with PIL and Kate Bush, who were both very adventurous, working on the fringe of the mainstream, which interests us, too."
  • Smith told Drowned In Sound: "In the studio, along with our producer Nick, we came up with lots of little rhythmic tricks to keep the momentum of the song going underneath the guitar riff."
  • Smith explained to Drowned In Sound that this song is "about feeling self-righteous even though we all have similar primal impulses."
  • The lyric "You'll still end up on the revolving dancefloor in the middle of the river," refers to the infamous floating Newcastle nightclub The Tuxedo Princess.
