Songfacts®:

  • This was Maxine Nightingale's breakout song and it hit in a huge way. It's about a woman in a relationship that's begun to fail and she wants them to bring back what brought them together in the first place. Though the song was a huge hit, Nightingale was never able to repeat its success, though "Lead Me On" did very well a few years later. After 1980, she shifted her career and now mostly sings jazz, though she occasionally performs her old hits to her fans. >>>

  • Maxine Nightingale is a UK singer who appeared in various stage musicals such as Hair, Jesus Christ Superstar and Godspell before going solo.
  • This was written by the British songwriters Pierre Tubbs and J. Vincent Edwards.
  • In 1988, the singer Sinitta released a version on her 1988 album Wicked which went to #4 in the UK.
  • Nightingale did not want to record this in a "crush" rhythm (where bass, percussion and most accompaniment are all on the downbeat). In fact, she nearly refused to record the song but songwriter/producer J. Vincent Edward convinced her to record it as suggested. >>>
